Preparing for the hackathon

Wow, it’s been fantastic to see a diverse group of people registering for the hackathon and I have been humbled by the support we’ve had from expert judges and mentors. What a multi-talented group you are!

I can’t wait to see what emerges from your collaboration and brainstorming.

To ensure we have a great weekend, some preparation needs to happen now. Here is the information you need.

Finding the venue. The hackathon will be held at 261 Morrin Road, St Johns, Auckland. Just inside the gates you’ll see the School of Population Health to your right (that’s where we’ll be) and parking to your left.

Parking. It’s free to park.

Here is a map of the area and where you can park. Look for building 730.

There is parking next to the School of Population Health for people with disabilities.

Finding the Function Room. The hackathon will kick off in the Function Room in the School of Population Health. As you come through the entrance to the building you’ll see some wide stairs – go up the stairs and veer left where you’ll find the Reception Desk for the hackathon. Collect your name badge and you’ll be shown where to go.

If you don’t do stairs, then come up in the lift which is to the left of the wide stairs. We’ll be on Level 2. You’ll see the hackathon Reception Desk as you come out of the lift.

Kick-off time. Be sure to get here before we kick off at 6.00 pm on Friday 13 Feb.

Pitching an idea. If you are pitching an idea, then start preparing now. Think of it like an elevator pitch, and use elevator pitch rules. You will have 2 minutes to pitch your idea. Yeah, that’s a very short time, but it focuses the mind.

Forming and storming. After the Pitch Session, you will be invited to form groups and have your first brainstorm in a breakout room or in the café or outside in the courtyard – wherever you feel most creative.

Food and beverages. To fuel your creativity, the Aurora café (great coffee and food)  will be open on site throughout the Hackathon so bring eftpos or cash with you.  We will provide a few light refreshments during the event but no fully catered meals. The Function Room has a small kitchen with a fridge and hot water urn if you want to bring in food from home.

Leaving time. At 10.00 pm on Friday and Saturday the building will close. Plan to leave at least half an hour before 10.00 pm (a computer closes the front door and you know how computers can’t tell when the last person is about to leave and doesn’t forgive you if you’re late leaving) but we will be there to remind you.

The next day the doors will be open at 8.00 am when you can come back and carry on with your group’s work.

It’s going to be exciting to see what emerges from all the collaboration!

Looking forward to seeing you there.
